Vegetation and sites of fir forests on Mt. Oxia (central Greece), with emphasis on the morphological adaptation of Greek fir trees to drought

Zusammenfassung
Fir forests are an important and widespread landscape component in the mountains of southern and central Greece with high ecological and economic value. However, the taxonomic position of Greek fir populations has not been completely clarified yet and their relation to the site conditions and especially to drought has hardly been studied until now. The fir forests in the geographical region of Sterea Hellas (central Greece) consist of Abies cephalonica and A. xborisii-regis, with the later considered being a hybrid between the former species and A. alba. In the mountain range of Oxia, both taxa occur in a dynamic state. Furthermore, the intergrading populations of hybrid firs show significant variability in particular morphological features, which may indicate adaptation to drought. A comparative study between stands in different site conditions will be carried within this project, trying to determine the relation between the morphology of needles-twigs and site conditions. Moreover, phytosociological and site classifications of the fir forests of Mt. Oxia will contribute to the better understanding of the plant communities, the site differentiation and the ecology of fir forests in central Greece.
